Our annual report 2019
"Every deactivated landmine means one life saved" - this principle motivated us in 1997 to found World Without Mines (WWM). Since then we have cleared anti-personnel mines and explosive remnants of war in 14 countries. We are now also supporting Sri Lanka on its way to becoming free of mines.
In Laos, we carried out a 10-year evaluation in 2019. The aim was to show what had changed in the last 10 years in Laos and particularly in the Khammouane Province, as well as what role WWM was playing and what the needs for the future might be. The findings were encouraging: we cleared a total of 710 hectares of land and sensitized 140,000 men, women and children to the danger. Year to year the casualty rate decreased from over 300 in 2008 to 24 in 2018 throughout Laos, particularly in our project region of Khammouane. Also the wellbeing of those affected has improved significantly after the clearance of cluster munition and remnants of war. At last people feel safe again. This confirms to us: we are on the right track!
This has all been made possible by the generosity of our private and institutional donors and the support of our reliable partner organizations.
