The Landmine Monitor 2020
Number of victims again very high
A few days ago, the Landmine Monitor was published for the 22nd time. Each year it examines progress towards a mine-free world.
Global funding for mine clearance fell by around 7 percent in 2019. Nevertheless, at least 156 km² of land was cleared of landmines and more than 123,000 landmines were destroyed. These are both increases since 2018.
2019 was the fifth year in a row with high numbers of recorded casualties from landmines and explosive remnants of war. A total of 5,554 people were injured or killed. The number of civilians rose to 80 percent. 43 percent of them were children and adolescents. This is a shocking result that shows how necessary mine clearance still is.
